Seasons of Love — From the musical Rent

Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes
Five hundred twenty five thousand moments so dear
Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes
How do you measure, measure a year?
In daylights, in sunsets
In midnights, in cups of coffee
In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife
In five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes
How do you measure, a year in the life?
How have we measured a year—our five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes?  We’ve measured it on Ethan Time.
In teardrops, in fear, in sleepless nights and anxious days, in questions, in prayers, in the warmth of Team Ethan, in the growth of Zakary and Elyse, in Ethan…
We look at Ethan and he is in a far better condition than he was a year ago.
While June 29 is the “anniversary” date, we will forever be reminded of that fateful day on the last Saturday of June. We can imagine every minute of that day, as it was the day we were wrapping things up at home in preparation for leaving town on a week-long vacation. With the kids at camp and in Israel, we chose destinations that were drivable and within a couple of hours from camp. We were going to stay a few days at a B&B in Wisconsin, followed by a couple of days in Chicago, and then finish with some time in Indianapolis before picking up Ethan and Elyse the following Sunday. That Saturday evening we were planning to meet some friends at the local Greek festival. In fact, when we saw Jen’s number come up on my phone in the mid-afternoon, I thought it was to discuss logistics for later that evening…never could we have imagined the purpose of the phone call.
Over the past year, Ethan has been cared for by first class medical teams in Indianapolis and Cincinnati.  They saved his life.  They have given Ethan the opportunity to recover and rehabilitate – to what extent remains unknown and they have taught us how to care for him.  We have been touched by so many and have learned so much.  With Ethan medically stable, we are now pursuing treatments which will help to accelerate his rehabilitation.  Today we are writing from Atlanta, as Ethan is receiving treatments at the Carrick Brain Center.  As we try to move forward, we are focused on providing Ethan with every opportunity to recover and rehabilitate to his fullest potential.  Most of these treatments are not covered by insurance. The donations made to  HelpHOPELive in honor of Ethan are being used to provide him the opportunity to participate in these treatments and others we may seek in the future.  Your contributions are invaluable – they make a difference and they are tax deductible!
We have seen and talked with families at the Center who have experienced profound effects from the treatments.  The patients we have met all have amazing journeys which further our hope.  Ethan’s treatments come from the learnings of functional neurology – working to awaken his brain. We will remain in Atlanta for a few more days before returning home. We look forward to seeing if this type of treatment will aid in accelerating Ethan’s path to recovery.
As we have been all year, we remain grateful for the continuous support and love we have felt from all who have joined us on our journey.
We are steadfast and strong as we begin another year,
Alexia and Scott
